Announcement – My YouTube Channel

Drum roll please…

The day is here people! I finally managed to get my first video up on YouTube. After 2 attempts at uploading and much frustration it is now officially live on my channel.

As you can tell I was a little bit nervous about filming this video but I think my geeky streak came through!

So for those at you who haven’t been here that long I’ve actually been hinting at this for quite a while. I’ve always wanted to get into YouTube and create a channel that could be joint with my blog. Obviously at the moment I don’t actually have a channel banner, so if anyone has any tips for me in that department please let me know! But other than that I’m quite happy with how everything has turned out.

If you’d like to see more videos from me please don’t forget to subscribe to my channel and like the video. For my next one I’m thinking about doing ‘My Eczema Story’ what do you think? Does that sound like something you’d like to watch?

If you’re already on YouTube please leave a link to your channel below so that I can check it out!

Sharing A Secret – Skin Conditions And Mental Illness

Blogtober day thirty’s topic is very appropriate, and you’ll know why if you were tuned into BBC Radio 1 at around 6pm yesterday.

Today I’d like to talk to you about the link between skin conditions and mental illness. I’d like to share with you a secret – my own struggle.

If you’ve been here a while, or know me personally, then you’ll know that I have battled with pretty severe eczema for a couple of years now. You’ll probably know that it caused me a lot of physical pain. But, what you probably don’t know is that my mental wellbeing also suffered as a result.

My Eczema Made Me Depressed

During the worst periods of my eczema I battled depression, anxiety and complusive behaviours. In fact, I spent a short while on anti-depressents before I decided that it wasn’t the right route for me.

The problem with skin conditions is just that, they affect the skin. This in turn can effect our perceptions of ourselves, and the way that we think others percieve us, thus lowering our self confidence and increasing our anxiety in social situations.

This is exactly what happened when I was suffering badly with my eczema, and it still does happen to me. I struggled to get out of bed in the morning, I was disgusted and reduced to tears at the sight of myself, I felt hopeless and worthless, I became anxious at the thought of difficult social situations and I developed repeptitive behaviours as a way of coping with this. I still do now. Even now I find myself getting nervous and itching at my feet, or pulling fabric between my toes as a sort of way of soothing myself.

Things Need To Change

You probably wonder why I’m sharing this. I mean, I know Blogtober required me to share a secret today. But why did I choose to share this particular, sensitive one?

Well, it’s time for things to change. We need to remove the stigma that surrounds mental illness. Because mental illness is all around us. Fact: 17 in 100 people experience suicidal thoughts at some point in their lifetime. Fact: A 2009 study found that 9.7 in 100 people experienced mixed feelings of anxiety and depression that year alone. And these are just the figures that are reported, the real numbers are likely much higher because of the stigma that is attached to mental health.

The fact of the matter is that having a skin condition affects the way you feel about yourself. Eczema, psiorasis and acne are very visible conditions. It is true, occasionally people aren’t very understanding and can be mean about your condition. But the truth is that there isn’t enough support out there for people with these conditions. I battled with eczema for two years before I was placed on anti-depressents. Not once in that time did anyone ask me how I felt. Not once in that time did anyone notice that something was wrong, even when I broke down in tears in the nurses office having my feet bandaged one Friday night.

Even when I decided it was time to ask for help. When I couldn’t sleep and I was starting to cruise through life, days at a time, emotionless and lost. I was simply placed on medication and sent away.

I have decided to share this secret with you today because I don’t think it should be difficult for us to be able to talk about our mental health. I hope that this helps some of you to speak out, or listen, when it comes to your own and others mental health.

A Dog Called Yogi ♡

Since I never shut up about the giant ball of fluff I thought I’d tell you a little more about my dog; Yogi. At least that way you can picture him when I try to explain different stories and scenarios. He is an Alaskan Malamute cross Siberian Husky and is currently 10 months old.

We got him at 8 weeks old, a tiny little ball of fur. Although even at 8 weeks he was 7kg and nearly twice the size of his litter mates.

I chose the name Yogi because he looks like a giant, fluffy teddy bear. Plus Liam didn’t agree with any of my other suggestions (Pookie Bear, Barney, Cleatus, Boo Boo and Dave.)

Yogi loves to steal things that don’t belong to him.

BROKEN THANKS DOG

I try to go training with Yogi once a week or once every two weeks if we can make time. He’s coming along really well and can now sit, stand, lay down, stay, heel and give me eye excellent contact. His recall needs a little work.

He likes to lay down in strange positions.

Yogi loves dogs and he plays with a small group of border terriors and french bulldogs every day at doggy day care. Size doesn’t matter to Yogi but he loves to have a good run around with a dog more his size.

Yogi doesn’t like surprise visits to the vet.

No

If he isn’t running riot he’s normally curled up fast asleep.

And from this we can conclude that my dog is 100% insane.

Just one more for good measure…

My Favourite Youtube Channels

I know I literally just said there was nothing interesting I could possibly say today and my mind had really gone blank but suddenly the inspiration has come to me!

I love Youtube. It’s an amazing resource for connecting with other people and sharing information. I love to watch a makeup tutorial or review on my lunch break and I regularly find myself mesmerised by vlogs of people just living their daily life. So to show you what I mean here is a list of my favourite Youtube channels and what they are about.

Brye AshleyBrye Ashley

This is the most recent channel that I have discovered but my gosh is she amazing. Her videos range from makeup tutorials to daily vlogs and rants which I love. She manages to really be herself on camera and some of her videos are very emotional and raw which is often very difficult to do when you’re on camera. She really manages to make her videos seem personal and she makes every effort to be in touch with her subscribers which she nicknames her BumbleBryes!

Dr. Sandra LeeDr. Sandra Lee

This channel is not for the squeamish or faint of heart. It features a collection of videos including blackhead and acne extractions as well as cyst removal and skin cancer treatment. Dr. Sandra Lee posts her videos online with her patient’s permission for educational purposes but most of her subscribers, such as myself, go there for a bit of relaxation. There is something so therapeutic about watching extractions for me.

Grav3yardgirlGrav3yardgirl

This channel belongs to the succesful Youtuber Bunny Meyer. Bubbly, engaging and honest she does everything from OOTD and get ready with me videos right through to pintertest’s and tea vlogs. I love Bunny’s quirky style and the attitude’s to life, coping with anxiety and Youtube negativity that she conveys in her videos. Her channel would be great for anyone going through a difficult time right now as she posts a wealth of good advice and support on her channel.

Gigi GorgeousGigi Gorgeous

This is probably the first Youtube channel I really got into. You name it and she’s done it. Q&A, tutorials, vlogs and monthly favourites are Gigi’s area of expertise. I find her channel so refreshing and empowering and I love the way she present’s herself as a transgender woman and the way she talks about her experiences. I really love her personality and I think she is making leaps and bounds for the transgender community.

Buzzfeed VideoBuzzfeed Video

I love this channel for funny and easy to relate to videos that cheer me up when I need a little boost. They have everything from taste tests and the try guys try to facts and short videos that address social issues. They have various other channels that focus on different topics such as Buzzfeed Blue and Buzzfeed Violet but this channel is my favourite as it presents the biggest variety of videos.

So there you have a few of my favourite Youtube channels. Of course I am subscribed to hundreds and I love them all but I thought I’d mention the most important to me. What are your favourite Youtube channels? Or do you have a channel of your own that you’d like me to subscribe to?

10 Things About Me That You Might Not Know

I love to know more about people in the blogging and vlogging communities, and I’m an absolute sucker for this tag. So since I’m new to the blogging world I thought I’d join in and share a few things about me that you probably don’t know.

Me and Liam

1. I live with my beautiful boyfriend of two (ish) years in a bungalow in our small village. ♥

2. I lived in Australia for a year when I was thirteen, we were supposed to be staying their indefinitely but that’s a whole other story.

3. I have not been to University and don’t plan to any time soon, I just don’t do well away from my family and  I can’t see myself committing to one course for three years or more.

4. I have a younger sister who is currently completing her final year of A Levels and who hopes to get into the University of Leeds to study History.

5. I have a 9 month old Alaskan Malamute cross Siberian Husky called Yogi who I’m surprised I haven’t mentioned yet because I talk about him LITERALLY all of the time! My Baby

6. I am only 5 foot tall! My Aunt always told me that they don’t make diamonds as big as rocks.

7. Despite being known as a chatterbox I HATE talking on the phone, especially to people I don’t know like energy or insurance providers. It’s so awkward!

8. I am terrified of the dark, and have been for as long as I remember. This is usually easily cured with a night light though.

9. My goal is to one have my own brand of hypo-allergenic and fragrance free makeup, haircare and skincare.

10. I drive a van! Mainly because I take Yogi to the kennels and back every day whilst I’m at work and he outgrew my old car. I could have got an estate but he didn’t really fit comfortably into any of the models I looked at.

So there you go, ten things about me that you might not know. Let me know if you’ve done this tag I’d love to have a read!
